How and Why You Should Limit the Amount of Time Your Children Spend on Screens

In this day and age, staring at a screen is pretty commonplace. However, there are very unhealthy consequences of this popular activity.

Why it is bad for kids to sit in front of screens:

When people sit front of their TV or phone screens, they tend to be inactive for prolonged amounts of time.

This level of inactivity can lead to weight gain and a variety of other health concerns and problems that could take years to develop. Sometimes, people who sit in front of screens become bored or anxious and end up snacking when they really are not hungry, at all. It also leads to weakness and atrophy for various body parts and systems.

Mentally, people are sucked into a whole world that exists through the screens of computers and televisions. This world is different than real life. If you are too preoccupied with this world, it is very easy to neglect your life and all of the great, fulfilling experiences that you can have in real life. This is the reason why it is important for parents to peel their kids away from screens every now and then and have them engage with the real world.

How to get kids away from screens:

First off, you should talk to your children about the serious health ramifications of sitting mindlessly in front of screens. As a parent, you should consider making your children earn screen time by doing chores, doing extra-curricular activities and partaking in family events. This will help them find passions outside of watching television or playing games on a computer.

It also helps to be good a influence by limiting your own time in front of screens. We have more power than we think when it comes to influencing others, and a change in your lifestyle can be a good example for everybody around you. This is especially true when it comes to your young children.

Another method of getting children away from screens would be to designate certain days and certain hours as “no screen.” During these days and hours, children can do whatever they want to do, as long as they are not in front of a screen.

Spending quality time with your children is a good way to combat sitting in front of a screen. Talk to your child, play games with your child and take walks with your child—anything but looking at a screen.
